As 2023 winds down, I thought I’d share some of my favorite things from the year:
Best fiction book: I read a lot of fiction this year, but looking back I think Samantha Shannon’s A Day of Fallen Night was my favorite. Nothing like a good ol’, thick, well-done high fantasy. Some of my other favorites were Marissa Meyers’ Gilded duology, Babel by R.F. Kuang, Walk the Vanished Earth by Erin Swan, and A History of Wild Places by Shea Earnshaw
Best non-fiction book: I didn’t read a lot of non-fiction this year, but my favorite hands down was The Deep Down Things by Seth and Amber Haines. If you’re a person of faith struggling with questions, church hurt, etc, this book is for you.
Best film(s): Honestly this one feels like a toss-up between Everything Everywhere All At Once (which I wrote about here), and Oppenheimer (which I wrote about here). I saw each film only once, but they’ve lingered with me throughout the year.
Best TV show(s): Another toss-up here between season 3 of Ted Lasso and season 2 of Loki, both of which provided bittersweet yet satisfying endings for their characters.
Best album: I listened to Roo Panes’ The Summer Isles a ton this year. Also really enjoyed Age of Apathy by Aoife O’Donovan, The Record by boygenius, Silent Signs by DeYarmond Edison, I Only See The Moon by The Milk Carton Kids, and Someday I’ll Make It Up to You by Tyson Motsenbocker
What were some of your favorite things from 2023?
